Examples of projects
The Musical Works has been involved in over the past year
July
2003 - 2 Inspire in collaboration with Sheffield
College’s Ethnic Minority Student Achievement Grant.
A
one-day event at Sheffield Hallam University’s NMB building
consisting of musical workshops during the day, and a performance
in the evening featuring the young people who participated during
the day alongside national acts such as the So Solid Kids and Panjabi
Hit Squad. Workshops included samba, African drumming, DJ-ing, breakdance,
streetdance, street art (graffiti), steel pans, video-making and
beats & rhymes (music technology and singing/rapping). The aim
of the day was to promote college courses to young people, focussing
on young people from a black ethnic minority background.
August
2003 – Multiple Heritage Service Summer Musical Programme
A
2-week event with the Multiple Heritage Service, who promote awareness
and self-confidence to young people from a mixed race background.
Workshops included DJ-ing, percussion, breakdance, streetdance,
video-making, creative writing and beats & rhymes (singing/rapping).
We have been asked to provide their summer programme in 2004.
August
2003 – Workshops at Earl Marshal Youth Centre
The
Musical Works organised a series of workshops at this youth centre,
including beats & rhymes and scrap percussion. From these initial
workshops we have gone on to organise many more including another
summer programme in 2004.
August
2004 – Respect at Sharrow Juniors & Longley Estate
A
series of beats & rhymes workshops aimed at promoting respect
for themselves and other people among young people from a black
ethnic minority background.
August
2004 – Drumming workshops in collaboration with Sheffield
Wildlife Trust
A
series of workshops to inspire young people to use parks and green
spaces in the Gleadless Valley.

October
2003–December 2004 – Burngreave World Music Project
in collaboration with Sheffield
Music Service.
An
extended project to deliver taster sessions to 6 schools in Burngreave
in “world music” in steel pans, West African drum &
dance, East African percussion & singing, Indian percussion,
percussion & music technology and samba. These have proved successful
and many of the schools now have weekly after-hours groups in these
styles.
March
2004 – Work experience for Multiple Heritage Service
2
weeks of work experience at studios affiliated with The Musical
Works, Knuckles and G2 Studios.
March
2004 – Family Learning Days at Pye Bank Primary, Byron Wood
Primary and Firs Hill Primary
The
Musical Works provided workshops in Indian percussion, East African
singing, scrap percussion and steel pans at family learning days
at primary schools in Burngreave to involve children and their parents.
These coincided with a 2 week series of workshops in Indian percussion
and Bhangra dancing.

April
2004 – Steel Inn Open Day
Evening
of workshops including beats & rhymes, streetdance and DJ-ing
at the opening ceremony of a new youth club on The Manor estate.
This has led to various one-off workshops over the year.
April
2004 onwards – Streetdance workshops at Scowerdens Youth Centre
12-week
series of streetdance workshops at Scowerdens Youth Centre.
June
2004 – Workshops with Young Asian Women’s group in Firth
Park
Workshops
included beats & rhymes, streetdance and Indian percussion.
July
2004 – Peace in
the Park Kids’ Area
The
Musical Works ran the kids’ area at the Peace in the Park
festival and organised workshops in percussion, streetdance, breakdance,
costume-making and circus skills.
July
2004 – Sharrow
Festival 2004
The
Musical Works organised various workshops over the 2 week festival
including streetdance, breakdance, beats & rhymes, creative
writing, story-telling, West African drum & dance, digital art,
casting and banner-making.
July
2004 – Wickersley College Summer Festival
The
Musical Works organised a week’s workshop series in percussion
& music technology.
