This
exciting and innovative regeneration project involves the
purchase and refurbishment of a Grade ll Listed Courtyard
Building (currently known as Stag Works) - an important part
of the cutlery and silverware industry of the past but now
an important cluster of music, recording and associated multimedia
activity, as well as a home to some remaining traditional
metal industries. The Electro Works Project is aimed at securing
and improving the building for music enterprises and establishing
a centre for the music industry in South Yorkshire.
When
complete the Project will be economically and financially
self-sustaining, providing:
- Around
fifty affordable managed workspaces housing recording
studios, music promoters, record labels, music PR companies,
legal services and other music related activities associated
with the music industry and its local support infrastructure.
- A
home for the jewellery and precious metal businesses already
based in Stag Works
-
Start up and incubator units for those starting up in
the music industry
- A
café bar and a medium sized live music venue
- Training
facilities and a major music education initiative focussed
on developing creative and business opportunities for
young people
- An
important contribution to the physical, economic, social
and cultural development of the Sharrow District, South
Sheffield, the City Centre, the Cultural Industries Quarter,
the City as a whole and the wider sub-region of South
Yorkshire.
However,
this is not a blue skies project; the building has been an
important base for music in Sheffield since the late sixties,
when Def Leppard started their career rehearsing here.
Stag Works already houses the largest concentration
of music enterprises in Yorkshire.
