Background
The Electro Works Project, initiated in July 1999, is being managed by a Development Team comprising existing tenants of Stag Works and the building’s landlord and owner, with advice and support from the Cultural Industries Quarter Development Agency (CIQA) and the named consultants.

Significance
This is an important pilot project demonstrating how listed buildings of character can be furnished with new sustainable culturally-based economic functions which can contribute to both the regeneration of the local community and to the creative, economic community of Sheffield and South Yorkshire.

Aims and Objectives
The Electro Works Project involves the purchase, refurbishment and development of the Grade II listed building currently known as Stag Works (84 John St.), in order to:

  • Provide a managed cluster of affordable workspaces, start up units and incubator schemes designed to house and support current tenants and attract new music industry based enterprises.
  • Offer business support, training and information for both tenants and other music industry enterprises in the region.
  • Provide, organise and manage flexible support services including internal ITC networking, a cafe bar, exhibitions, business advice, special events and education and training programmes for workspace users and the wider economic community.
  • Operate a music venue which will showcase new musical product, provide a flexible training space and contribute to the growing entertainment economy in Sharrow.
  • Deliver a range of mentoring and music training projects with the emphasis on developing the creativity of and increasing opportunities for young people in Sharrow.
  • Support other specific programmes and provision including gender issues in the music industry and the development of uses of technology in music production and distribution.
  • Develop and manage the building and resources to give full accessibility and use to the local community and people associated with the music industry irrespective of age, size, gender, sexuality, faith or disability.
  • Contribute to the economic, social, physical and cultural regeneration of the Little Sheffield and Sharrow area, to the stabilisation of the metal trades in the area and to the further growth and development of local music production and related industries in Sheffield and South Yorkshire.
  • To operate according to environmentally friendly policies.
